ATJ efforts are enhanced by a grant from the Texas Bar Foundation

The State Bar of Texas was recently awarded a $20,000 grant from the Texas Bar Foundation to support the Texas Access to Justice Commission’s ongoing Access to Justice Internship Program. ATJIP participants learn about access to justice issues and attorney-client relationships, gain hands-on legal experience and mentorship, develop legal decision-making and advocacy skills, and provide direct legal services to low-income clients while under the supervision of civil legal aid attorneys. At the same time, legal aid providers receive skilled law students eager to apply legal skills learned in the classroom to help members of the local community resolve their legal issues, expand community outreach, and relieve some of the workload of the legal aid provider. More »

Champions of Justice Gala Benefiting Veterans Raises $550,000

AUSTIN – The Texas Access to Justice Commission with its co-sponsor, the State Bar of Texas, honored veterans throughout the state at the Champions of Justice Gala Benefiting Veterans last night at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center in Austin, where $550,000 was raised to help provide civil legal services to low-income Texas veterans. Texas Supreme Court Justice Brett Busby, who served as the Master of Ceremonies, was pleased to announce the inaugural “Macey and Harry Reasoner Access to Justice Lecture Series”, which featured Lieutenant General (Ret.) Nadja West, 44th Army Surgeon General and former Commanding General of U.S. Army Medical Command as the keynote speaker for the event. More »
