Press Release

The recent killings of Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Mike Ramos amidst a public health and economic crisis that has disproportionately devastated communities of color underscores in excruciating ways that equal justice is not yet available to all Americans. We extend our most sincere condolences to their families and the communities that loved them.

We are also painfully aware that millions of Texans were already struggling to make ends meet before COVID-19, and that struggle has now given way to suffering. Our hearts are with those who have lost loved ones, jobs, and homes and who fear for their safety and survival each day.

The Texas Access to Justice Commission exists to expand access to, and enhance the quality of, justice in civil legal matters for low-income Texans. We envision a justice system that is accessible, transparent, fair, and responsive to the needs and lived realities of the diverse communities it serves. Without that, the rule of law is a hollow promise for far too many. We stand with those who are demanding change and working to create an equitable and inclusive future. We will do our part by continuing to clear the path to justice for all Texans in civil legal matters until that vision is realized.
